Our History

In the months prior to the November 2021 Veteran’s event, a small group came together with the goal of not only conducting the Tribute to Veteran’s in 2021, but to figure out how we could do more, become a more permanent organization with a mission that was sorely needed, and to determine our chances of gaining broad financial support. The 2021 event validated our belief that others felt a dedicated nonprofit organization like this was needed and that many in the community would support it financially, through volunteering their time, and supporting events.

So, between May 2021 and December 2022, all the requisite documentation to establish a nonprofit corporation and get it up and running was pulled together. Also, during that time two Tribute to Veteran’s events and nine public workdays were scheduled and conducted as part of the Gravestone Maintenance & Cleaning program. We talked with several dozen people in the community who have direct interest in Mountain Home and collected their concerns about what was needed both now and for the future. That community input helped shape all the programs included in this application.

The programs found on this site represent both active and soon to be active programs. One of our board has maintained a website for Mountain Home since 2019; www.MountainHomeCemetery.com. Additionally, this website www.HeirsOfMountainHome.org has been completed and launched.

Three of our current board members and one of our best volunteers have the longest ties to Mountain Home. They represent the 5th and 6th generations of Mirah Lee Ballard, one of the founders of the church at Chestnut Grove, established on September 30, 1861. Shortly after the founding of the church, this place was established as the graveyard for the church. The name was changed in the early 1900’s because it was not located on adjoining property to the church which created considerable confusion. Finally to be forevermore called Mountain Home.
